The XXV General Assembly and Congress of the International Union of Crystallography was held in Prague this year. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, Philip was unable to attend in person. Instead, he joined the conference virtually from his home office in Melbourne. The time difference made for some late nights, but he always had the company of his trusty assistant Pixie (seen luxuriating behind the computer in the picture below!).


Last night Philip presented 'Towards the measurement of bonding electron densities in nanostructured materials' at the conference. This collaborative work aims to measure bonding electron densities within several different nanostructures and interfaces, using QCBED based on the multislice formalism. At the end of 2020, Philip received the great news that his application for ARC funding for a Discovery Project in collaboration with Prof. David R. Clarke (Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, Harvard University) and A/Prof. Laure Bourgeois (Monash Centre for Electron Microscopy, Monash University) was succesful. The project will investigate the experimental mapping of electron densities in nanostructured materials using a new technique combining the latest solid-state theory with electron scattering in one of the world's most advanced electron microscopes. The project will be conducted throughout 2021 to 2024. Watch out for developments arising from this exciting research!

Philip's work continues at full steam during the COVID-19 pandemic. From his home office, pictured below, he is working on his research, writing papers, teaching via Zoom, attending virtual meetings, supervising his students and participating in the life of Monash University.
